This week a couple in Weston, MA accused of Section 8 fraud will be arraigned in connection with the scheme. The couple, 45 year old Paulo Montenegro and his wife, Rosana Pereira, 48 were each indicted on charges of larceny by false pretense and conspiracy to commit larceny by false pretense, in connection with fraudulently obtaining Section 8 public housing benefits and fraudulently obtaining mortgage loans from financial lending institutions. The couple is alleged to have made $250,000 by telling institutions that they made $12,000 monthly in order to qualify and obtain loans on multi-family properties when in fact they did not. Rosana Pereira is also alleged to have under reported income and assets so that she could rent a three bedroom for a greatly reduced rate subsidized by the Cambridge Housing Authority. In the meantime, the couple were living in a home in Weston that Montenegro had purchased for $865,000.
Attorney General Martha Coakley said in the press release. “Individuals who cheat the system for their own personal benefit will be prosecuted and held accountable.”
